About Skelton Gate

Learn about the Skelton Gate community and housing development

Overview
#

Skelton Gate is a modern residential development located in East Leeds, offering a mix of housing options for families, first-time buyers, and professionals. The estate is part of the larger Skelton Grange area, benefiting from excellent transport links and proximity to local amenities. A short drive away from Leeds City Centre, and minutes away from RSPB Skelton Lake nature reserve and historic Temple Newsam grounds.

History
#

The area was formerly part of the open-cast Waterloo Main Colliery site which operated between 1815 and 1968.

There’s an article here mentioning the area, and the lost pit village just down by Skelton Lake. The OS Survey map from 1852 of the area, shows the site of Waterloo village between the river and canal. There’s also this video discussing the village, and trying to track down evidence.

In more recent years, the land was used for agriculture and grazing. The River Aire was redirected to run more parallel to the canal, and Skelton Lake was created!

Skelton Gate development planning began in the 2010s as part of Leeds City Council’s vision to create sustainable, connected communities on the outskirts of the city. The site is being transformed into a thriving residential area.

Groundworks began in 2022, with the first residents moving in late 2023.

Development
#

The estate is currently being developed by several reputable housebuilders:

  • Avant Homes
  • Evans Homes
  • Countryside Homes (Vistry)

Phases 1a (Evans and Vistry) and 1b (Avant) of the estate are currently under construction and consist of 438 homes in total.

Taylor Wimpey has submitted an application to develop phases 2a (108 houses - south of Beckside Way, north of the beck), 2b (173 houses - south of the beck), and 2c (89 houses - south of Countryside homes, nearest the waste management site), adding a total of 370 homes. Phase 2c will also include additional play areas in the strip of land in line with the electricity pylons.

A future phase 3 (700 homes) is also planned on the land between the waste management site and Skelton lake. It is understood there are some significant challenges to developing that land however.

The land south of Pontefract Lane and north of Beckside Way is earmarked for commercial and school building, but no plans are currently submitted.
